What is most exciting about this opportunity is that it is consistent with the Roadmap we shared with you all last summer. We committed then to ‘thinking big’ while growing our business and our people, within our communities. This acquisition is the first major step towards doing all of that.
Schupan purchased Mid America Recycling!
Today, Schupan completed the purchase of Des Moines, Iowa-based Mid America Recycling. The acquisition aligns with Schupan’s growth plans, and expands our recycling operations by 28 people in the Iowa marketplace.
Mid America Recycling is a mixed-materials recycling facility and processor for Iowa’s container deposit law.
Schupan, nationally recognized for its efficient beverage container processing system, identified the opportunity as a great strategic and cultural fit.
Who is Mid America Recycling?
Mid America Recycling (MAR) is a multi-material recycler and deposit container processor in Des Moines, Iowa. Mid America has been a recycling leader in Iowa for years, and has a knowledgeable team with strong customer relationships.
What does this mean for Schupan?
As part of our Schupan Roadmap, our “Think Big” pillar identified a priority to expand and grow, responsibly and safely. After much analysis and careful consideration, we believe this purchase to be low-risk and intuitive to our growth path.
With this purchase, we are adding 28 Iowa team members to our family. Most current Schupan employees will remain unaffected by this change. Some, particularly in the beverage business unit, will be called upon for their expertise and industry knowledge.
Not only is MAR a cultural fit with Schupan, it is also a strategic fit. Iowa, as one of the ten bottle bill states, has a collection system for deposit containers similar to Michigan’s. Schupan, as a nationally-recognized processor and marketer of used beverage containers (UBCs) is excited to apply and grow its industry knowledge of providing the most effective principles to processing and marketing UBCs while extending its footprint to another bottle bill state.
